Cupping Therapy in TCM: What It Is, How It Works, and What to Expect

Cupping Therapy: Releasing Stagnant Energy Through Ancient Technique

Cupping therapy has gained worldwide attention in recent years, partly thanks to athletes and celebrities displaying the distinctive circular marks it leaves on the skin. But cupping is far more than a trend. It is one of the oldest healing techniques in Traditional Chinese Medicine, used for over two thousand years to release stagnation, promote circulation, and restore the smooth flow of Qi through the body.

How Cupping Works

Cupping involves placing glass, bamboo, or silicone cups on the skin and creating suction, either through heat (fire cupping) or a mechanical pump. This suction draws skin and underlying tissue upward into the cup, which promotes blood flow to the area, releases tight muscles and fascia, stimulates the lymphatic system, and draws stagnant Qi and toxins to the surface for the body to process and eliminate.

What the Marks Mean

The circular marks left by cupping are not bruises (bruises result from tissue damage). They are caused by stagnant blood and cellular waste being drawn to the surface. The color of the marks reveals the level of stagnation in that area:

Light pink to red: Mild stagnation, good circulation. This area has relatively healthy energy flow. Dark red to purple: Moderate to significant stagnation. This area has been holding tension or experiencing reduced circulation for some time. Very dark purple or black: Severe, long standing stagnation. These areas typically correlate with chronic pain, old injuries, or deeply held tension patterns.

The marks typically fade within three to ten days. With regular treatment, the marks become progressively lighter as stagnation clears, which is a visible sign that treatment is working.

Who Benefits from Cupping

Cupping is particularly effective for muscle pain and tension, respiratory conditions (chest cupping), digestive issues, stress and anxiety, headaches, and general energy stagnation (feeling "stuck" physically or emotionally).

From a Five Element perspective, cupping is especially beneficial for people with stagnant Wood energy (tension, frustration, muscular tightness) and people with excess Earth or Water energy (heaviness, sluggishness, fluid retention). Fire types and Metal types should receive cupping with lighter pressure to avoid depleting their energy.
