The 9 Body Constitutions of TCM

Nine constitutional types codified by Professor Wang Qi at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, now widely used in modern Chinese clinical practice. Each is a stable energetic pattern that shapes how a person responds to environment, food, stress, and seasonal change.

Why Constitutional Type Matters

Two people can eat the same diet and live the same lifestyle and end up with very different health outcomes. The reason in classical TCM is constitutional type: the energetic ground pattern that determines what supports each person and what depletes them. Cold raw foods that energize a Damp Heat constitution exhaust a Yang Deficient one. Vigorous exercise that strengthens a Qi Stagnation constitution depletes a Qi Deficient one.

Most people have a primary constitutional type and one or two secondary patterns. Understanding your constitution lets you select food, exercise, sleep schedule, and seasonal adjustments that genuinely support you rather than following generic advice. The Yin Yang Five Element framework on this platform offers a complementary lens: your Day Master (日主) reveals your core elemental signature, which often correlates with constitutional type.
