Chinese New Year 2027 Falls on 6 February
The Year of the Fire Goat begins on 6 February 2027 and runs to 25 January 2028. The date moves every year, which is more than a calendar curiosity: it is the single most common reason people are told the wrong Chinese zodiac sign.

A baby born on 5 February 2027 is not a Goat. The Goat year has not started yet. That baby belongs to the Fire Horse year that opened on 17 February 2026, and stays a Horse for life.
This is the single most common error in online zodiac calculators, and it is not a rounding problem. It reassigns the sign of everyone born in a window that is five to seven weeks wide, every single year. Every New Year date from 1924 to 2043.
Why the date moves
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, so it tracks both the moon and the sun. New Year falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which lands somewhere between 21 January and 20 February on the Gregorian calendar. 2027 is a late one.
That is also why the year is not 365 days. The Goat year of 2027 runs 6 February 2027 to 25 January 2028, which is 354 days.
What happens across the fifteen days
New Year's Eve on 5 February is the reunion dinner, the largest meal of the year. Day one is for the paternal side of the family, day two traditionally for a married daughter's return to her own parents. Red envelopes pass from the married to the unmarried and from older to younger throughout.
The festival closes on 20 February with the Lantern Festival, fifteen days in. The zodiac year itself keeps running for another eleven months.
The boundary is the first pillar, and there are four
Getting the New Year boundary right fixes your year animal, which is the first of the four pillars in a Chinese birth chart. The other three come from the month, day and hour you were born, and the day pillar in particular carries your core element, the character at the centre of the chart. That is the part a date alone cannot reach, and it is why two people who share a sign can share almost nothing else.
