The Classical Role

The Lung is called the Prime Minister in classical TCM. It governs qi by inhalation, regulates the entire body qi, and rules the exterior immune defense.

Function in the Body and Mind

Governs respiration, descends qi (the body needs descending function for proper digestion and elimination), regulates the immune barrier (wei qi), opens to the nose, manifests in the body hair and skin. Houses the po (corporeal soul, body memory).

Common Imbalances

Lung qi deficiency produces frequent colds, weak voice, easy fatigue. Lung yin deficiency (often dryness related) produces dry cough, dry throat, dry skin. Phlegm in the lung produces productive cough and difficulty breathing.

Practices to Support This Organ

Practice slow deep breathing in early morning (Lung peak window between three and five); spend time in clean fresh air; eat white moistening foods (pear, white fungus, almond, lily bulb); honor grief that the body holds; protect against autumn dryness.
