Internal Emotion 5 of 7 · Injures the Lung · Yin Metal

Healthy Expression

In healthy expression, grief is the appropriate response to loss. It moves through stages, completes its work, and integrates the changed reality. The healthy adult relationship to grief is to honor it fully and let it move rather than resist it.

When It Becomes Pathological

Grief that is suppressed (carrying on as if nothing happened) or perpetuated (unable to integrate the loss after years) injures the lung. The classical pattern is described in many ancient and modern Chinese sources as the strong link between unresolved grief and lung weakness.

Somatic Manifestations

Frequent colds and flus, weak voice, easy fatigue, dry skin, certain skin conditions (especially dry conditions), reduced immune function, asthma patterns in the wake of major losses, the sensation of weight on the chest that is not anatomically explainable.

Practices for Restoring Balance

Honor grief that the body holds; practice intentional crying when needed; spend time in nature (especially in autumn); do gentle breathing practices that strengthen the lung; eat lung supportive foods (pear, white fungus, almond, lily bulb); receive bodywork that releases the chest; consider therapy or grief support groups.
