Healthy Expression

Fright is distinguished from fear: fear is the slow building anticipation of threat, fright is the sudden shock of threat actualizing. In healthy expression, fright mobilizes a fast survival response and then resolves once safety returns.

When It Becomes Pathological

Sustained fright (especially in trauma patterns where the nervous system remains activated long after the precipitating event) injures both the heart spirit (scatters it) and the kidney essence (drops qi). PTSD patterns map cleanly onto classical fright (jing 惊) descriptions.

Somatic Manifestations

Palpitations triggered by reminders, hypervigilance, startle responses, sleep disruption with nightmares or sleep paralysis, urinary frequency and urgency, dissociation patterns, certain anxiety patterns with both heart and kidney symptoms simultaneously.

Practices for Restoring Balance

Skilled trauma therapy (somatic experiencing, EMDR, sensorimotor psychotherapy) addresses the underlying patterns; TCM modalities especially acupuncture and herbal medicine support the heart spirit and replenish kidney essence; gentle daily nervous system regulation (breath, slow walking, grounding); gradual exposure work with proper support.
