The 7 Internal Emotions (七情)

Seven emotions that classical TCM identifies as primary internal causes of disease when they are excessive, sustained, or suppressed. Each emotion injures one or two specific Zang organs in classical theory.

From Healthy to Pathological

Each of the seven emotions is healthy in its appropriate measure. Joy warms the heart. Anger signals violated boundary. Worry preserves what matters. Pensiveness powers careful thinking. Grief integrates loss. Fear protects against threat. Fright mobilizes survival response. Each is part of the full human emotional palette.

The classical TCM concern is not the presence of these emotions but their excess, sustained intensity, or suppression. Sustained anger transforms into liver fire. Chronic worry knots the spleen and lung qi. Unprocessed grief depletes the lung. Chronic fear depletes the kidney. The work is not to eliminate emotion but to honor each one in its right intensity and duration.
