Anger

怒 · Nu

The wood emotion that ascends as a signal when balanced and bursts upward as fire when suppressed or exploded.

Internal Emotion 2 of 7 · Injures the Liver · Yin Wood

Healthy Expression

In healthy expression, anger is information about a violated boundary or unmet need. It rises, communicates, and resolves. The healthy adult relationship to anger is to honor it as a signal and act on it skillfully without harming self or others.

When It Becomes Pathological

Anger that is suppressed (held in without expression) eventually transforms into liver qi stagnation, then liver fire. Anger that is exploded (without inner work) damages relationships and erodes trust. Both extremes injure the liver.

Somatic Manifestations

Tension headaches especially at the temples, premenstrual irritability, sighing, sensation of obstruction in the throat, eye strain, hip and side body tension, certain types of insomnia between one and three in the morning, gallbladder symptoms.

Practices for Restoring Balance

Honor anger as information; develop the practice of feeling anger fully without acting on it impulsively; move the body when anger arises (walk, swim, side bend stretches); practice clean clear communication; reduce alcohol and fried foods that overload the liver.
