思 · Si

The earth emotion that focuses thought when balanced and ruminates without resolution when excessive.

Internal Emotion 4 of 7 · Injures the Spleen · Yin Earth

Healthy Expression

In healthy expression, pensiveness is the focused attention of careful thinking, planning, problem solving, and remembering. The healthy adult relationship to thinking is to think when thinking serves and rest when thinking stops serving.

When It Becomes Pathological

Excessive pensiveness, especially rumination (thinking the same thoughts in circles without progress), knots the spleen qi. Academic overwork, anxious overthinking, and certain types of perfectionism all carry the spleen pensiveness pattern.

Somatic Manifestations

Fatigue after eating, soft stools, easy bruising, sallow yellowish complexion, weak digestion, abdominal bloating, heaviness, sticky white tongue coating, tendency toward dampness, the inability to fall asleep due to circling thoughts (different from anxiety insomnia).

Practices for Restoring Balance

Set time limits on thinking (when stuck, take physical movement before continuing); practice writing thoughts out rather than circling them in mind; eat warm cooked grains and root vegetables that support spleen yang; take walks after meals; reduce information input during meals.
