Free Chinese Astrology Calculators

Nine free tools for working out your Chinese sign, your hour animal, your Chinese age, and the dates that decide them. Every one uses the real Chinese New Year date for the year in question, which is where most online calculators get it wrong.

Start with what you want to know

Why the Chinese New Year date keeps coming up

A Chinese zodiac year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which moves between late January and the third week of February. Any calculator that reads your birth year straight off the calendar will give the wrong sign to everyone born in that window — which is a meaningful slice of every year.

All the tools here resolve against the documented Chinese New Year date for the year you enter, and say so when your date falls close to the line. You can also look up every New Year date from 1924 to 2043 directly.

What a calculator can and cannot tell you

These tools answer questions that have a single correct answer: which animal, which element, which date, which hour. That is genuinely useful and it is free, with nothing held back.

What none of them can do is read the balance between the four pillars of your birth — your year, month, day and hour together. That is where your core element sits, the character at the centre of your chart, traditionally called your Day Master, and whether it is supported or drained is the difference between two people who share a sign and share nothing else.

Free, and it takes a birth date. All four pillars, your core element, and the Five Element balance behind them.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Chinese astrology calculators free?
Yes, all of them, with no sign-up. The full answer appears on the page. Creating a free account is only needed for the personal chart reading, which requires a birth time the calculators do not ask for.
Why do different websites give me different zodiac signs?
Almost always the Chinese New Year boundary. A calculator that reads your birth year off the Gregorian calendar will misassign anyone born in January or early February, because the zodiac year had not started yet.
Do I need my birth time?
Only for the hour animal and for a full four-pillar chart. Your year animal, element, Chinese age and zodiac-year check all work from the date alone.
How accurate are the Chinese New Year dates used here?
They are the documented astronomical dates for each year from 1924 to 2043, stored once and shared by every tool and page on the site, so no two pages can disagree.
