Chinese Zodiac Hour Calculator

The Chinese day is divided into twelve two-hour blocks, and each one is ruled by an animal. The block you were born in gives you a second sign most people never find out about, because it is the one that needs a birth time.

Your hour animal
Horse
11:00–13:00 · Fire

This is the animal ruling the two-hour block you were born in. In a full chart it becomes your hour pillar — the part of you that shows up in private, and the one most people never learn because it needs a birth time.

What the hour animal actually tells you

Your year animal is the one everyone knows — it is what people mean when they ask what sign you are. The hour animal works on a smaller scale and a more private one. Where the year sign describes the shape of a life, the hour sign tends to describe how you are when nobody is performing: at home, off duty, late at night.

It is sometimes called the secret animal for that reason. Two people can share a year sign and read completely differently to the people close to them, and the hour is often where that difference lives.

The blocks run from 23:00 rather than midnight, which is why the Rat hour straddles the date change. If you were born at 23:30, your hour animal is the Rat even though the calendar had not yet turned.

One hour, one pillar

The hour animal is one of the four pillars in a full chart, alongside your year, month and day. On its own it is a hint. Read together with the other three, it shows whether your core element — the character at the centre of your chart, traditionally called your Day Master — is supported or worn down, and that is the reading that actually changes how you plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Chinese zodiac hour?
It is the animal ruling the two-hour block you were born in. The twelve blocks start at 23:00 with the Rat and run in the usual zodiac order: Rat 23:00–01:00, Ox 01:00–03:00, Tiger 03:00–05:00, and so on.
Why does the Rat hour start at 11pm?
The Chinese day begins at 23:00 rather than midnight, so the first block of the new day starts an hour before the calendar date changes. Someone born at 23:30 has the Rat as their hour animal.
What if I do not know my birth time?
Then the hour pillar cannot be calculated, and any tool that claims otherwise is guessing. Your year, month and day pillars still work. A birth certificate or hospital record is the usual way to recover the time.
Is the hour animal more important than the year animal?
Neither outranks the other. The year sign is read as the public self and the hour sign as the private one. A full reading weighs all four pillars together rather than picking a winner.
