Cold

寒 · Han

The yin pathogenic factor that contracts, stagnates, and impairs the warm circulation of qi and blood.

External Evil 2 of 6 · Water signature · Winter

Nature and Pattern

Cold is yin in nature, dense and contracting, stagnating and slowing. It injures yang qi, especially the kidney and spleen yang. When cold invades the body, it freezes movement at every level: blood circulation slows, qi stops flowing smoothly, fluids accumulate.

How It Manifests in the Body

Cold manifests as feeling cold, cold limbs, sharp fixed pain that improves with warmth and worsens with cold, pale complexion, clear copious urine, watery loose stools, white tongue coating, slow pulse.

How It Attacks the Body

Cold attacks externally through unprotected exposure (cold weather without warm clothing, wet feet in winter, sleeping on cold ground) and internally through cold raw foods, iced drinks, and excessive cold medications. Cold injures the lower back and abdomen most easily.

Common Conditions

Cold induced colds and flu, painful menstruation that improves with warmth, joint pain that worsens in cold weather, digestive cramps from eating cold food, frostbite, certain types of low back pain, fertility issues from kidney yang cold.

Prevention and Care

Layer clothing especially the lower back and feet; soak feet in warm water with ginger before sleep; eat warming cooked foods over raw cold; reduce iced drinks; honor winter rest rather than overworking against the season; protect the lower back during menstruation.
