Dampness
The yin pathogenic factor that obstructs qi movement, weighs down the body, and produces heaviness and sluggishness.
Nature and Pattern
Dampness is yin in nature, heavy and turbid, lingering and slow to resolve. It obstructs qi flow, weighs down the upper body, and produces a characteristic feeling of heaviness in the limbs, head, or torso. Damp is the most stubborn of the six evils once it has settled in the body.
How It Manifests in the Body
Dampness manifests as heaviness in the body and limbs, foggy thinking, swollen ankles, edema, sticky sensation in the mouth, white sticky tongue coating, soft sticky stools, increased white discharge in women, weeping skin lesions, fungal infections.
How It Attacks the Body
Dampness invades externally through prolonged exposure to damp environments (rainy seasons, wading in water, damp basements) and internally through excessive consumption of cold raw foods, dairy, sweets, and alcohol. Spleen yang deficiency makes the body unable to clear damp, producing internal damp accumulation.
Common Conditions
Chronic fatigue with heaviness, weight gain that resists exercise, certain types of arthritis (worse in damp weather), recurring fungal infections, foggy mental states, swollen lymph nodes, certain digestive disorders with sticky stools, excess white vaginal discharge.
Prevention and Care
Reduce cold raw foods, dairy, refined sugar, and alcohol; eat warming damp draining foods (millet, barley, adzuki bean, yam, ginger, fennel); exercise to mild sweating to release damp through the skin; avoid sitting in damp environments for extended periods.
