Dryness
The yang pathogenic factor that consumes body fluids and injures the lung especially.
Nature and Pattern
Dryness is yang in nature in classical reckoning, light and ascending, drying and consuming. It injures body fluids (yin) and especially affects the lung organ (which itself prefers moist conditions). The autumn season carries the strongest natural dry signature.
How It Manifests in the Body
Dryness manifests as dry cough without phlegm, dry throat, dry nose, dry mouth, dry skin, dry hair, constipation with hard small stools, scanty urination, dry eyes, dry cracked lips, in severe cases dry red tongue with little coating.
How It Attacks the Body
Dryness invades externally during autumn dry seasons and in arid climates. Indoor heating in winter creates artificial dryness that resembles the autumn pattern. Internally, dryness builds from inadequate water intake, excessive coffee, alcohol, and over consumption of dry roasted foods.
Common Conditions
Autumn cough, sinus dryness, skin conditions worse in dry weather, certain types of constipation, dry eye conditions, eczema in dry climates, postnasal drip with dry rather than productive cough.
Prevention and Care
Increase moistening foods in autumn (pear, white fungus, almond, lily bulb, honey, sesame, soft white foods); add humidifiers in dry climates and heated rooms; drink warm rather than cold fluids; eat soft slow cooked foods over dry roasted; honor the autumn lung organ.
