Fire (Internal)
The yang pathogenic factor that flares upward, consumes fluids, and disturbs the spirit.
Nature and Pattern
Fire is the most extreme yang pathogenic factor. Unlike summer heat (which is strictly seasonal external), fire most often arises from internal causes: prolonged stress, suppressed emotion (especially anger), excessive consumption of alcohol or heating foods, prolonged stagnation that transforms into fire.
How It Manifests in the Body
Fire manifests as high fevers, intense thirst, red face, red eyes, dry red tongue with thick yellow coating, rapid forceful pulse, agitation and irritability, ulcers in mouth and tongue, bleeding from heat (hemorrhoids, nosebleeds), insomnia with excessive dreaming, severe constipation with hard dry stools.
How It Attacks the Body
Fire often arises from one of three sources: external heat penetrating deeper from summer heat, prolonged liver qi stagnation transforming into liver fire (the most common modern pattern in stressed populations), or excessive consumption of alcohol and heating foods.
Common Conditions
Acid reflux with burning, peptic ulcers, certain inflammatory skin conditions (acne, rosacea), tension headaches with red face, certain types of insomnia with vivid dreams, irritability that flares quickly into anger, hypertension with red face and dizziness.
Prevention and Care
Reduce alcohol, coffee, fried foods, lamb and other heating meats, and chili; eat cooling bitter foods (chrysanthemum, bitter melon, dandelion, kuding tea); practice anger awareness and release (movement, journaling); cultivate quiet at the end of the day; address chronic stress directly rather than letting it transform into fire.
