Summer Heat
The yang pathogenic factor unique to summer that exhausts qi and consumes body fluids.
Nature and Pattern
Summer heat is yang in nature, dispersing and rising, ascending and exhausting. Unlike fire (which can arise in any season from internal causes), summer heat is strictly seasonal: it exists only during the hot months. Summer heat tends to combine with damp because of the increased humidity of the season.
How It Manifests in the Body
Summer heat manifests as high fever without strong chills, profuse sweating that does not relieve symptoms, intense thirst, dark concentrated urine, fatigue out of proportion to activity, restlessness, in severe cases heat stroke patterns. Summer heat with damp adds heaviness, lassitude, and digestive symptoms.
How It Attacks the Body
Summer heat attacks during the hottest weeks (especially the sanfu 三伏 dog days of late July through August). Outdoor workers, athletes, and those who cannot retreat to cooled environments are at highest risk. Excessive cold drink consumption paradoxically worsens summer heat by injuring the spleen.
Common Conditions
Heat stroke and heat exhaustion, summer colds with fever, summer diarrhea (especially watery), summer fatigue, prickly heat rashes, certain pediatric summer fevers.
Prevention and Care
Avoid strenuous activity during midday heat; rest at midday; sip warm water (paradoxically more cooling than ice water); eat watermelon, mung bean, lotus leaf, and other classical summer cooling foods; reduce alcohol; protect the head from direct sun.
