Nature and Pattern

Wind is yang in nature, light and rising, mobile and changeable. It often serves as the leading vector for other evils, opening the body exterior so that cold, heat, damp, or dryness can penetrate. Classical TCM calls Wind the chief of the hundred diseases (风为百病之长).

How It Manifests in the Body

Wind manifests as sudden onset symptoms, rapid changes in symptom location, itching that moves around the body, dizziness, twitching, tremors, and sudden facial paralysis (Bell palsy). External wind invasion typically appears as common cold and flu patterns.

How It Attacks the Body

Wind enters most easily through the nape of the neck, the occiput, and the upper back. Modern habits that expose these regions (low cut shirts in cold environments, sleeping with neck uncovered in front of fans, wet hair in cold air) increase wind invasion risk.

Common Conditions

Common cold, flu, allergic conditions, hives, vertigo, certain types of headache (especially occipital and temporal), Bell palsy, sudden onset rashes, tinnitus that comes and goes.

Prevention and Care

Cover the nape of the neck and upper back when temperature shifts; do not sleep with strong fans directed at the body; dry hair fully before going outside; eat warming pungent foods (ginger, scallion white, perilla leaf) at the first signs of wind invasion.
